Jigging for Cornish Squid - October 2014

Squid fishing from the kayak is fun and makes a pleasant change from just fishing for fish.  The autumn and early winter months are good months to try for Squid in Cornwall and as I consider them a treat for the dinner table, I like to have few trips each season.

Below is a video of one of those trips.

  1. Hi Rob,
    Another great video.
Only caught squid by accident once before on my old Warrior 165 boat. It surprised me by accurately squirting water in my face...twice... and then a load of ink all over the boat. What a mess, But very tasty.
Really enjoy your videos. Thanks for posting them.

    Mick.

    1. Hi Mick. Thank you for the comment. You should see the colour of my dry suit as one of them off camera got me! Hope your own fishing is going well. Really hope the weather allows us all to get out plenty of times this autumn and early winter as it is a great time for fishing. Rob.

    2. Yes, I hope so too! I've got a lot on my " to do" list as far as kayaking is concerned, but with these choppier seas I'm having plenty of bass success from storm beaches at night. My kayak is rigged and ready though for when the weather calms down a bit.
Probably see you at Pascoes some time.
      Mick.

  2. Great video Rob. Been an interesting year on the kayak. Loads of bait fish around all summer and a few codling as you know. Will be interesting to see how this plays into the early winter. Did you catch any of those Atlantic Bonito which came inshore earlier in the summer chasing the baitfish ? Had a bit of an influx by all accounts. I managed to catch 3. A cross between a mackerel and a small tuna and about the size of a large mackerel but deeper in the body with different markings. Nice eating ! Might see you out and about if the weather is suitable. regards. Mark

    1. Hi Mark. Thank you for the comment. No, I never came across the Atlantic Bonito but great we are getting these species turn up occasionally. I bet they fight well. The next few months are my favourite time of year for fishing with a good mix of species to be had providing, as you say, the weather allows it. If not it will be a bit of shore Bass fishing for me. I went out today for some more Squid fishing and had half a dozen with two big Squid, which was fun. Just to check, are you the Mark I met in the Carrick Roads last winter?

    1. Hi Leo. I have never tried for them other than from Sept to Dec. Oct and November have been my best months for Squid. They get them March/April further along the south coast but generally Oct/Nov appears to be best.
